PU Leather vs Genuine Leather for Guitar Bags: An OEM Material Comparison

Leather remains the most premium material perception in guitar bags. But for OEM production, PU leather has become the industry standard for good reasons. Here is an honest comparison.

PU Leather (Synthetic)

Consistent color and texture, lower cost, easier to maintain, animal-friendly, and available in any finish from smooth to distressed. Our 1062 series PU leather is engineered for abrasion resistance and a realistic grain. Most premium gig bags in the market use high-grade PU.

Genuine Leather

Natural grain, ages beautifully, but variable color between hides, higher cost, needs conditioning, and weight is higher. Best used for accent trim, handles and branding patches rather than full coverage.

Hybrid Approach

The premium brands we supply often use full PU leather bodies with genuine leather trim and handles. This gives the luxury look at a defensible price point.

Quality Signs to Inspect

  • Does the PU have a soft hand feel (tactile flexibility)?
  • Edge finishing: painted or wrapped edges prevent peeling
  • Stitch density around stress points
  • Color fastness under UV light
