Guitar Case Interior Maintenance: Keep the Cradle Clean and Fresh

The inside of a guitar case is the one surface that touches your instrument every single day — and it is usually the least cleaned. Dust, sweat and moisture build up in the padding and transfer back to the guitar. Here is how to keep it clean.

Regular Care (Every Few Months)

  • Vacuum the interior with a soft brush attachment — padding traps dust that scratches finishes over time.
  • Wipe vinyl and PU interior surfaces with a slightly damp cloth; dry completely before closing.
  • Shake out gig bags and check pockets for forgotten items (batteries, picks, cables).

Spot Cleaning

For marks on fabric interiors, use a mild upholstery cleaner on a cloth — never soak the padding. For PU leather interiors, a diluted soap solution works; avoid alcohol and solvent cleaners that dry out the material.

Odor Control

  • Dry the case thoroughly after any wet gig — moisture is the main odor source.
  • Place a small desiccant pack or cedar block in the case when storing.
  • Do not use strong air fresheners — the smell transfers to the guitar.

Zipper and Closure Care

Clean zipper tracks with a dry brush and lubricate with zipper wax or a light silicone spray if they stiffen. Check latches and handles seasonally — catch wear before a case fails on the road.

When to Replace Padding

If the neck cradle has flattened, the padding no longer holds its shape, or the interior shows wear through to the shell, replace the case or its padding. Compressed padding means reduced protection — not just less comfort. Browse durable, easy-care gig bags, or spec easy-clean interiors for your OEM order.
