What Does OEM Mean for Guitar Case Brands?

For guitar accessory brands, OEM is one of the most important words in sourcing — yet it is often confused with ODM. Here is a plain-English explanation.

OEM vs ODM

OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) means you supply the design and specification, and the factory produces exactly to your drawing. The product carries your brand.

ODM (Original Design Manufacturer) means the factory owns the design and offers it as a catalog product. You pick a model, add your logo, and sell it under your brand.

What brands should ask before ordering

  • Do you own the mold/tooling cost, or does the factory?
  • What is the minimum order quantity for custom colors and fabrics?
  • How are samples handled — prepaid or free for existing designs?
  • What QC steps happen before shipment?
