What Is a Semi-Hard Guitar Case? Structure and Materials

Semi-hard is the fastest-growing case category. Understanding the structure helps you spec the right one.

The structure

Three layers: outer fabric (nylon, PU or polyester), a rigid core (EVA, ABS or fiberglass sheet), and a plush interior. The core gives shape; the outer and inner layers give feel.

Core materials

  • EVA: flexible, light, good impact.
  • ABS sheet: stiffer, more protection.
  • Fiberglass: premium, very protective.

Why buyers choose semi-hard

  • Weight close to a gig bag.
  • Protection closer to a hardshell.
  • Backpack straps standard.
  • Lower shipping cost than hard cases.
