PU Leather vs Faux Leather Guitar Bags: A Material Guide for Buyers

When sourcing guitar bags for a brand, the material spec is one of the first decisions. Two terms dominate the market: PU leather and faux leather. Though often used interchangeably, they are not the same.

PU leather is a polyurethane-coated fabric that can be engineered to mimic full-grain leather with remarkable fidelity. Modern PU formulations are flexible, abrasion-resistant and easy to clean. For guitar bags, PU leather offers a premium look — including vintage two-tone and distressed finishes — at a fraction of genuine leather cost. It is the standard choice for mid-range to premium gig bags.

Faux leather is a broader category that includes PVC-backed materials. While cheaper, PVC-based faux leather tends to crack and peel over time, especially in cold weather. For products meant to last years on a musician’s shoulder, we generally recommend quality PU.

As a guitar case manufacturer, we offer a full range of materials — PU leather, microfiber, canvas and genuine leather trim — with custom color matching and embossing. If you are developing a product line, our team can send material swatches and help you balance cost, durability and visual appeal.
