How to Pack a Guitar for Air Travel: Hard Case vs Gig Bag

Flying with a guitar is stressful. Airlines vary, instruments are precious, and baggage handlers are not gentle. Here is what actually protects a guitar in the air.

Check-in vs carry-on

Small guitars (3/4 size or travel guitars) can sometimes fit overhead. Full-size dreadnoughts almost always go in the hold. Always confirm with your airline before booking.

Hard case is the minimum

For checked luggage, a rigid hardshell case with plush interior is the baseline. Add extra padding around the headstock and neck if your case is thin.

Gig bags and flights

Padded gig bags protect against bumps, not crushing. If you must travel with a gig bag, wrap the guitar in clothes and pray the bag is oversize-checked. Not recommended for hold luggage.

Checklist before flying

  • Loosen strings slightly (not fully).
  • Pad the headstock area.
  • Use a case that fits the guitar exactly.
  • Add an ID tag inside and outside.
  • Carry insurance or a fragile sticker.
