OEM and ODM are used loosely in sourcing conversations. The distinction changes who owns the design and who pays for tooling.
OEM — you own the design
You bring drawings, CAD files or a sample. The factory produces to your spec. You own the design and typically pay for molds and tooling.
ODM — the factory owns the design
You choose from the factory catalog. The factory owns the design and molds. You customize colors, fabrics and logos. Faster and cheaper to start.
Hybrid models
Most brands start ODM (pick a case, brand it) and move to OEM once volume justifies custom tooling. Some factories offer modified ODM — tweaking an existing design with your changes.
What we recommend
Start with ODM to test the market. Move to OEM for your hero product. Our OEM/ODM page explains both paths with real lead times.
