When brands approach us for OEM gig bags, the first question is almost never about color. It is about padding density, materials, and construction standards. This guide walks through the specification points that separate a premium gig bag from a commodity one.
1. Padding: 10mm vs 20mm vs 30mm
A budget gig bag uses 5-10mm of foam. Premium bags use 20-30mm high-density EVA or multi-layer polyfoam, especially around the headstock and lower bout. Specify the exact thickness per zone in your OEM spec sheet.
2. Outer Fabric Grades
600D polyester is entry level. 1680D ballistic nylon, heavy canvas with PU coating, or premium PU leather (our 1062 series) are what buyers recognize as high-end. Waterproof backing is a must for touring musicians.
3. Hardware That Lasts
YKK zippers, metal D-rings, reinforced handles with steel cores. Cheap plastic hardware is the fastest way to make a premium bag feel cheap.
4. Interior Protection
Velvet or plush lining, neck rest, padded headstock cradle, and a scratch-free interior pocket for accessories. The interior is where customers judge quality at retail.
5. What to Ask Your Factory
- What is the foam density (kg/m³)?
- Are zippers YKK or equivalent?
- What is the stitching specification (stitches per inch)?
- Can you test drop protection per ASTM standards?
