Pricing a guitar case line is a margin exercise: factory cost, freight, duties, channel margin and price positioning. Here is a practical framework.
The cost stack
- Factory ex-works price: material + labor + factory margin.
- Freight and insurance: sea freight for bulk, air for samples.
- Duties and taxes: varies by destination (EU, US, UK).
- Channel margin: distributor or retailer takes 40-60%.
Price positioning
Gig bags retail $20-60, semi-hard $50-120, hardshell $80-200, flight cases $150-400 in the US/EU markets. Your factory cost should leave 3-4x retail markup after channel margins.
Working backwards
Decide your retail price first, then subtract channel margin, duties and freight — the remainder is your target factory price. Share that target with us and we will spec the case to hit it.
