Guitar Strap Width Guide: Standard, Padded and Leather Options

Guitar straps come in widths from 1.5 to 3 inches, and the width changes more than looks — it changes comfort, stability and how the guitar sits on your body.

2-inch straps are the modern standard. They distribute weight well and suit most players and instruments. 1.5-inch straps are lighter and suit thin-body electrics, but can dig in with heavier guitars. 3-inch straps are the touring standard for acoustic and bass players who carry heavy instruments for hours — the wide surface spreads the load across the shoulder.

Padding matters too. Padded straps add comfort but can feel bulky; slim leather straps look elegant but need quality leather to stay comfortable. For premium feel, vegetable-tanned or hand-oiled leather develops character with age.
