Banjos divide into two families that need different case shapes. Getting the fit right protects the rim and tone.
Resonator banjos
Have a closed back and a deeper body. They need cases with resonator depth — usually ~4-5 in interior depth.
Open-back banjos
Lighter, shallower. Fit in slim cases or padded bags. More forgiving on depth.
Neck fit
Neck length varies (22-27 in scale). Headstock pockets should hold the peghead securely.
What to check
- Interior depth against your rim + resonator.
- Neck support at the peghead, not just the neck.
- Hard case for travel; padded bag for home.
