How to Choose a Guitar Strap: Length, Width and Material

A strap is the most personal accessory a guitarist buys. Fit, width and material decide comfort on stage and at home.

Length

Standard straps fit 38-60 in. Adjustable straps cover most players. Tall players and long-scale instruments may need extra-long straps — check the range before buying.

Width

Narrow (2 in) straps look classic but dig into shoulders. Wide (3 in) straps spread weight — best for heavy guitars and long sets. Padded strap covers add comfort on any width.

Material

  • Leather/PU: premium look, ages well, holds position.
  • Nylon: strong and cheap, can slide on the shoulder.
  • Suede/fabric: grippy, comfortable, stage-ready.

Ends and hardware

Leather ends last longest. Metal slots beat holes for adjustability. Quick-release ends speed up guitar changes on stage.
