How to Choose a Bass Gig Bag: Thickness, Padding and Fit

Bass guitars are longer, heavier and more neck-heavy than guitars, so a bass gig bag is not just a bigger guitar bag. Here is what to look for.

Padding Thickness

Look for 15–25mm padding on bass bags. The neck pocket needs extra foam because bass necks are longer and the headstock carries more leverage. Check padding at the bottom and around the body pocket, not just the top.

Interior Fit

Measure your bass body length and total length. Common bass sizes run 44–46 inches (112–117 cm) total. A bag that fits an acoustic guitar may be too short or too narrow for a bass body. Check the interior width at the lower bout.

Straps and Hardware

Backpack straps with chest or waist straps distribute the extra weight of a bass. Heavy-duty zippers and reinforced stress points matter more than on guitar bags — a bass is heavier to sling.

Water Protection

Bass gigs often happen outdoors or in bars with wet floors. A coated 1680D exterior or a rain cover keeps moisture away from the instrument.
